On June 7, 2025, Zhu Yonghui, Director of Beijing King&Capital Law Firm, and Nie Sufang, Sun Guangzhi and Peng Jiyue, senior partners of the Criminal Department, were invited by Beijing Fengtai District Lawyers' Association to carry out a training on the theme of “Effective Defense in the Stage of Court Trial”. The three lawyers focused on the three core links of court trial meeting, questioning and debating, and shared their practical experience and concepts in depth. More than 60 lawyers participated in this activity to discuss the professional enhancement path of criminal defense practice.
Opening Speech
At the beginning of the training activities, Mr. Zhang Deman, on behalf of Fengtai Law Association, expressed his warm welcome and thanks to King&Capital lawyers, and emphasized the significance of this training to enhance the professionalism of the industry and serve the construction of the rule of law.
In his speech, Mr. Zhu Yonghui, Director of King&Capital Law Firm, expressed his sincere thanks for the invitation of the Association and emphasized that “the core of effective defense lies in the polishing of details and the precipitation of professionalism” in light of the many years of experience in criminal business training of King&Capital Law Firm. He pointed out that criminal defense is an important cornerstone of the rule of law, and King&Capital has always taken the promotion of criminal defense talent training as its own responsibility, and looks forward to enhancing the professional standard of the industry through in-depth exchanges with the Fengtai Law Association and injecting more kinetic energy for the construction of the rule of law.
Practical Lecture
(I) Interview - “Outpost” for Effective Defense
Nie Sufang took the theme of “Meeting in the Court Trial Stage”, starting from the legal basis of the right to meet, emphasizing that meeting is not only the transmission of information, but also a key link to build trust and calibrate the defense strategy. Combined with cases, she systematically analyzed the core tasks and specific methods of meeting in the court trial stage: focusing on the facts charged in the indictment, reaching a consensus on defense ideas with the defendant, and realizing effective cooperation in the court trial through pre-trial counseling. At the same time, she also focused on explaining the key points of risk prevention and control in the meeting, such as refusing to pass illegal materials, avoiding the trap of inducing confessions, etc., prompting the lawyers to guard the effectiveness of the defense with the bottom line of professionalism. Wang Shao Ming, supervisor of Fengtai Law Association, highly praised her lectures as “both theoretical depth and practical significance of guidance”, which provided valuable practical guidance for young lawyers.

Mr. Sun Guangzhi took the “eRentBao” case and the GlaxoSmithKline commercial bribery case as samples to start the course of “Criminal Defense Skills of Court Examination”. He put forward the concept that “evidence is the skeleton of criminal charges, and examination is the scalpel for the defense to reshape the facts”, and systematically sorted out the methodology of examination through the five plates of “procedural significance, object, subject, angle, and relationship”. He emphasized that the evidence needs to grasp the “balance between confrontation and collaboration”, not only dare to question the prosecution's evidence of the legitimacy of defects and defects in the power of proof, but also be good at guiding the court to focus on the case of the point of contention, so that the defense opinions embedded in the depth of the logic of the judicial decision. Its jurisprudence and cases parallel teaching method, won the lawyers present a wide range of resonance.
(C) Debate - the “Art of Offense and Defense” in Court Trial
PengJiYue lawyer to “court debate of the road and art” finale, put forward “big debate” concept: “debate is not only limited to debate, but throughout the trial of the whole game of thinking”. He especially emphasized that “the debate is not to try to be fastidious, but to persuade the judge with legal logic and emotional resonance”, which triggered the participants to think deeply about the nature of criminal defense.
During the interactive exchange session, the lawyers present actively participated and asked the three lecturers for advice on practical problems encountered in their daily practice. The three lawyers answered the questions patiently and the atmosphere was warm.
At the end of the training, Mr. Zhang Deman, Deputy Director of the Criminal Law Research Society of Fengtai Law Association, concluded that meeting, questioning and debating constitute the “iron triangle” of effective defense in the trial stage of the court, and that the sharing of experts from King&Capital provided a three-dimensional operation guide for the practice of criminal defense. He said that Fengtai Law Association will continue to launch the “criminal defense Whampoa” series of training, and the King&Capital and other professional organizations to deepen cooperation, to create a more in-depth learning platform. Participating lawyers have said that this training is full of dry goods, both theoretical height and close to the actual handling of cases, and look forward to more professional exchanges with King&Capital in the future.
