Lin Wei, representative and president of Southwest University of Political Science and Law, focused on three key words in his congratulatory speech at the celebration. He first emphasized the academic background of King&Capital founder Wenchang Tian, pointing out that he was an alumnus of Northwest University of Political Science and Law and obtained a master's degree from Southwest University of Political Science and Law in 1983. Secondly, he highly praised the benchmark role of Wenchang Tian and King&Capital in the field of criminal defense, which has established industry standards through high-quality practice and vindicated criminal defense. At the same time, he spoke highly of Tian Wenchang's determination to leave his professorship at the age of 48 to devote himself to the legal profession, saying that the establishment and development of Kyoto coincided with the promulgation of the Lawyers Law, reflecting the resonance between lawyers and the rule of law. Lin Wei concluded by expressing his hope that Southwest University of Political Science and Law and Kyoto would deepen their cooperation and jointly contribute to the cause of the rule of law in China.
Fan Chongyi, Honorary President of the Institute of Litigation Law at China University of Political Science and Law, delivered a speech as a witness to King&Capital. He spoke highly of Tian Wenchang's firm decision to give up his management position at the university and devote himself to the legal profession, believing that his high political sensitivity, academic thinking, and foresight have profoundly shaped the development of King&Capital. Fan Chongyi proposed a three-stage theory of development for Chinese law firms, namely “investment, brand creation, and culture,” pointing out that King&Capital has successfully passed the first two stages and is currently in the crucial “cultural development stage,” with the core task of deepening its specialization, professionalization, and rationalization. Fan Chongyi specifically called on King&Capital to play a leading role in taking the lead in constructing a “Chinese legal scholarship” knowledge system and establishing an “evidence-based criminal defense system” to fill the gaps in the industry, support the high-quality development of the legal profession, and contribute to the modernization of the Chinese judicial system.
Wang Junfeng, former president of the All China Lawyers Association, delivered a speech as a representative of his peers, expressing his high respect and warm congratulations to Kyoto Law Firm and lawyer Tian Wenchang. He spoke highly of Kyoto Law Firm as a leader in the field of criminal defense and its important contribution to the process of the rule of law in China. Wang Junfeng particularly pointed out the success of Tian Wenchang's career: he is not only a top criminal defense lawyer who has achieved great success in the field of legal practice, but also a mentor who has trained many talented students and continues to promote the development of the industry. Combining the current development status of China's legal profession, which has nearly 900,000 practitioners, he emphasized that in the new era of rule of law construction and technological change, the industry needs more role models like Tian Wenchang to lead the way, and he wished King&Capital Law Firm continued success in writing a new chapter of “belief is with us.”
With academia in his left hand and case handling in his right, King&Capital has written over 200 million words in 30 years.
Tian Wenchang, founding partner and honorary director of King&Capital Law Firm, fondly recalled the development history of the firm. He introduced that King&Capital was founded in 1995 at the beginning of the legal system reform by scholars from the legal community who started from scratch and were determined to build a comprehensive large law firm. Although it experienced challenges such as changes in the initial team and professional structure transformation, through two key entrepreneurial ventures in 2002 and 2012, it finally achieved the goals of “integration, specialization, teamwork, and internationalization.”
Tian Wenchang summarized King&Capital's core achievements in six areas, based on its philosophy of “professionalism, integrity, rationality, and perseverance.” These include treating every case with full commitment, with the motto of “pursuing excellence and living up to expectations”; promoting the rule of law through individual cases and actively offering advice and suggestions; courageously shouldering social responsibility by hosting legislative reform forums related to the Sun Zhigang and Huang Haibo cases, and persistently supporting public welfare projects such as the “Quanzhou Project” to assist students; Deeply cultivating the integration of theory and practice, publishing 129 books, over 6,000 articles, and a total of over 220 million words; innovating talent cultivation, leading the compilation of the first criminal defense tutorial, co-establishing the West China University of Political Science and Law Criminal Defense Research Institute, a postdoctoral studio, and a doctoral practice base, and founding a Young Lawyers Club; and building an equal, friendly, and continuously reforming law firm culture. Tian Wenchang emphasized that reform and improvement of mechanisms are the cornerstones of King&Capital's sustainable development, and expressed his sincere gratitude on behalf of the entire firm for the long-term support from all sectors.
At the subsequent ceremony to announce the achievements of King&Capital lawyers, Wang Jiuchuan, senior partner of King&Capital, reviewed the firm's deep academic tradition and fruitful achievements, emphasizing that as a founding member, he had personally experienced and benefited from the inheritance and development of this professional culture. He said that since its establishment in 1995, King&Capital has always adhered to the concept of closely integrating theory and practice. Under the leadership of Tian Wenchang's “scholar-type lawyer” spirit, it has formed an “academic” culture based on professionalism and the pursuit of expert quality. Over the past 30 years, King&Capital lawyers have been tireless in their writing, publishing a total of about 6,000 articles and 129 academic and professional works, with nearly 30 more works awaiting publication, totaling more than 220 million words. Some of these achievements have been incorporated into national, provincial, and municipal scientific research projects. He said that in the current industry context that emphasizes “specialization, expertise, and innovation,” the professional philosophy that Kyoto Law Firm has adhered to over the years has been proven by history. In the future, it will continue to insist on learning, thinking, and writing, deepen the integration of theory and practice, and continue to build a team of lawyers with both theoretical height and professional depth, conveying this core value to society through the display of its achievements in writing.
Lawyer Xiao Shuwei, Party Secretary of King&Capital Law Firm, systematically reported on the achievements of King&Capital in practicing social responsibility over the past 30 years, saying that King&Capital will continue to “light the lamp of social responsibility” and be lawyers that satisfy the Party and the people. He mentioned that King&Capital has long promoted the rule of law through professionalism, upholding justice and promoting legislative improvement in individual cases by representing major cases such as the Liu Yong case and the Wu Ying case, as well as typical cases that clarify the boundaries between criminal and civil law. He said that Kyoto Law Firm has long been committed to social welfare, operating the “Quell Plan” education assistance project, with nearly 100 lawyers participating in the Beijing 12348 hotline, handling hundreds of legal aid cases, and many lawyers volunteering in remote areas such as Liangshan and actively participating in community legal education, which has been widely recognized by society.
Chu Changzhi, managing partner and CEO of Kyoto Law Firm, released the firm's strategic blueprint for the next decade on behalf of the firm. In the future, Kyoto Law Firm will focus on five major strategies: consolidating its advantages in criminal law, promoting the “three-pronged approach” of civil, commercial, and non-litigation services, focusing on five cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence and the low-altitude economy, and establishing the “Kyoto Service Case Database” within three years, which will include more than 5,000 typical cases and 100 sets of standardized procedures. Within five years, it will build the “King&Capital Smart Brain” system to achieve case prediction and one-click document generation, and construct a full-process digital risk control platform. It will upgrade the training mechanism for young lawyers, training 50 young key personnel in five years and 150 in ten years, and rely on postdoctoral studios and doctoral innovation practice bases to produce academic monographs and research articles. Deepening the “Quanzhou Plan” for financial aid and ‘Huomiao’ legal education, promoting the rule of law in Tibet, community legal stations, and assistance in central and western China; promoting the construction of domestic and overseas branches based on the principle of “elite density priority.” He emphasized that King&Capital will uphold a long-term perspective, strive to build a world-class law firm within ten years, and move toward a century-old foundation.
