On August 23, the qualifying round for the first division of the 2025 Beijing Young Lawyers Criminal Moot Court Competition concluded successfully. Notably, two teams composed of young lawyers from King&Capital Law Firm swept the top two spots in this qualifying round with their outstanding professional competence and brilliant courtroom performance. This marks the second time that King&Capital lawyers have secured the top two positions in this competition, showcasing the formidable strength of the firm's young legal professionals.
The first district qualifying round attracted eight teams from Beijing's Chaoyang District, Miyun District, Pinggu District, and Economic and Technological Development Zone, resulting in fierce competition. Under stringent rules, four teams—comprising eight contestants and four defendants/witnesses—would be selected. The two teams from King&Capital Law Firm were assigned to the prosecution and defense sides respectively.
Amidst the fierce competition, the defense team—comprising attorneys Xu Wei from Criminal Practice Group I, Feng Wang and Chen Sainan from Criminal Practice Group III, and Liu Bingyang from Financial Practice Group II—stood out with their solid professional expertise and outstanding on-the-spot performance, successfully clinching the first-place title. Meanwhile, the prosecution team—comprising attorneys Zheng Xuan and Qian Hao from Criminal Practice Group II, alongside Wang Lili from Fucheng Law Firm—delivered a standout performance. Their rigorous logical arguments and professional expertise secured them second place, demonstrating formidable strength.
Notably, attorneys Feng Wang, Zheng Xuan, Qian Hao, Xu Wei, and Chen Sainan all achieved outstanding individual scores, advancing to subsequent rounds. Feng Wang was named Best Defense Counsel, while Zheng Xuan, Qian Hao, and Xu Wei were recognized as Outstanding Defense Counsel. Chen Sainan ranked second in defendant and witness evaluations, fully demonstrating both individual expertise and the value of teamwork.
The team comprising Feng Wang and Chen Sainan from Criminal Division III and Xu Wei from Criminal Division I shared that their greatest insight was “simulated cases, genuine commitment.” They believe the preparation for a mock trial is no different from representing a real case—both involve meticulously refining a “work of art.” To prepare for the competition, they often pondered the case while walking, eating, or even sleeping. They utilized evenings after finishing their actual work to deeply study the mock trial case, with many insights emerging in the twilight of consciousness before sleep. They profoundly understood that a case is like a piece of jade, requiring constant polishing. Initially, a case might leave only a simple impression, but prolonged, deep contemplation often yields entirely new insights. A hasty glance might suggest one viewpoint, yet careful observation reveals fresh perspectives. Once a conclusion is reached, one must then rack their brains to express it in the most concise and persuasive manner. Immersed in this relentless exploration, a “professional spirit” naturally develops, bringing a profound sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. They emphasized that dedication pays off. The King&Capital team's consecutive sweep of first and second place in the competition is a testament to collective wisdom and relentless effort. The skills and habits honed during the competition will undoubtedly positively impact their real-world work, motivating them to craft every case with “champion-level quality.”
Attorneys Qian Hao and Zheng Xuan from Criminal Division II noted that their daily work typically involves analyzing cases from the defense perspective. This time, however, their team drew the prosecution role. Following the rules, they had to construct a “conviction framework” from the prosecutor's standpoint—a significant challenge to their professional capabilities. They understood that facing seasoned judges and “opponents,” securing a coveted advancement spot required more than mere “imitation.” They had to fully embody the role of prosecutors—from initial evidence analysis to drafting legal documents. With strong support from the firm and colleagues, the team refined their accusatory logic through repeated iterations and collaboratively completed the legal briefs. Throughout the competition, they witnessed outstanding performances from other participants in their division, gaining fresh insights into the “judicial community” and a deeper understanding of the meaning behind “pursuing excellence and living up to expectations.” This truly embodies the saying, “You're not just handling a case; you're handling someone's life.” Taking this as an opportunity, the team members will continue to refine their skills and enhance their professional capabilities. They strive to handle every case as a “masterpiece” in their future work, leaving no flaws or regrets.
The outstanding achievements of both teams in the competition were made possible by the diligent efforts and rigorous training of every participating lawyer. During preparation, they invested significant time and energy, utilizing every spare moment to refine their case strategies. Additionally, the meticulous pre-competition guidance from senior partners at King&Capital Law Firm and the comprehensive support from functional departments provided a solid foundation for the teams.
Though the first competition zone has concluded, the journey has only just begun for the five award-winning attorneys. They will continue reviewing their performance, meticulously identifying and addressing any shortcomings, and actively preparing for the next competition. They are determined to achieve further glory in the increasingly intense battles ahead.
