On the morning of June 24, 2026, Attorney Wen Yixin of Beijing King&Capital Law Firm visited the Huocun Village Committee in Zhaotang Town, Mentougou District, to deliver a pro bono legal education lecture on the topic of “Inheritance.” More than 20 villagers attended the event, which ran from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Attorney Wen Yixin is also a member of the community’s “Good Neighbors” volunteer legal service team. Tailored to the practical lives of rural residents, the lecture was divided into four main sections: first, the definition of assets eligible for inheritance; second, the various forms of valid wills recognized under current law; third, the standard procedures for the division and disposal of estates; and fourth, an analysis of typical inheritance cases relevant to rural realities. An interactive Q&A session was held during the presentation. The various inheritance-related questions posed by the attorney sparked lively discussion among the villagers. The venue was packed to capacity, and the villagers listened attentively throughout the session, taking notes on key points.

The atmosphere at the event was lively. Attorney Wen Yixin explained legal provisions in plain language by addressing practical challenges villagers face daily—such as issues related to homestead land, self-built homes, and land—and broke down complex legal regulations using down-to-earth language, effectively lowering the barrier to understanding for the public.
After the session, villagers unanimously agreed that the presentation was highly targeted. It systematically clarified many misconceptions regarding will drafting and property inheritance, helping them fully recognize the importance of advance estate planning and properly drafting wills. They found the session extremely beneficial and spoke highly of the legal education program.

After the session concluded, many villagers remained on-site to seek further advice. Two villagers specifically inquired about two common rural challenges: inheritance rights regarding reclaimed wasteland and the inheritance of rural self-built homes without property titles. Attorney Wen Yixin addressed their questions in detail, clause by clause, by referencing local land and real estate policies as well as the provisions of the Civil Code’s section on inheritance, and clearly outlined feasible solutions. The villagers who sought advice expressed great satisfaction with the professional and thorough responses.
This grassroots legal education initiative brought professional legal services right to the villagers’ doorsteps, effectively resolving the legal uncertainties rural residents face regarding inheritance. It tangibly bridged the “last mile” of legal services in rural areas, using public-interest legal education to support grassroots governance and safeguard villagers’ property rights.
