On the afternoon of September 14, the first session of the training focused on client reception. Attorney Liang Yali explained to the trainees the principles and objectives of client reception, as well as common pitfalls to avoid. This was followed by simulated exercises centered on two themes: understanding the facts of a case during client reception and providing professional advice based on those facts. Attorneys Yang Haiming, Zheng Xuan, and Tang Wanzhuo participated in the simulation as family members and later reviewed the exercise. Secretary-General Liu Limu and Deputy Director Li Bin analyzed and commented on the trainees’ performance, pointing out issues and shortcomings in their client reception and proposing corresponding improvement plans.

Following the client reception session, Attorney Liang Yali delivered a lecture titled “Attorney Visits in Criminal Cases” to over 100 trainees. Attorney Liang explained the relevant concepts of the right to visit, the historical development of China’s legal provisions on this right, its fundamental elements, and the purposes and objectives of such visits. During the practical training segment, Attorney Liang had the trainees simulate their first visit with a client after accepting a retainer during the investigation phase. During this session, Attorneys Yang Haiming and Tang Wanzhu simulated the role of criminal suspects being interviewed by the trainees. Drawing on challenges they had encountered during their own practice and using the simulation case as a reference, Attorneys Yang and Tang helped the trainees gain a realistic understanding of the risks and key considerations involved in criminal client interviews. After the simulation, Attorney Liang, Secretary-General Liu Limu, Deputy Director Li Bin, and Attorney Zheng Xuan reviewed and provided feedback on the trainees’ performance.

Finally, drawing on the afternoon’s sessions, Attorney Liang Yali provided a comprehensive review and evaluation. This training on client reception and consultation adopted the criminal defense practical training model of Northwest University of Political Science and Law, combining theoretical review with simulated exercises to allow participants to experience real-life scenarios through case studies. Participants unanimously expressed that they had benefited greatly from the training, which significantly contributed to the enhancement of their professional skills.
