During the lecture, drawing on his extensive experience handling criminal cases over the years, Attorney Xia Jun elaborated on the importance and pivotal role of reviewing case files in defense work. He emphasized that only by effectively reviewing case files can attorneys mount an effective defense, thereby ensuring that their clients’ rights are fully protected. Attorney Xia Jun structured his lecture around the regulatory requirements, methods, techniques, and risk prevention measures for reviewing case files.
During the lecture, Attorney Xia Jun used multiple real-world cases to explain in detail the key points, methods, and precautions for reviewing case files. He pointed out that the review process should begin by examining the alleged facts and charges to analyze whether the logic of the prosecution is reasonable; it should also focus on the factual and legal points of contention in the case to identify facts and evidence favorable to the defense; It is essential to comprehensively review all case materials without overlooking any piece of evidence, as the outcome often hinges on the smallest details, and defense arguments can be found in the minutiae. As defense attorneys, the review process should be conducted multiple times and repeatedly—progressing from a general read to a close read, and then to a focused read. Through meticulous review, defense strategies and key arguments should be continuously refined and perfected.

Attorney Xia Jun further pointed out that when reviewing case files, defense attorneys must analyze and deconstruct the facts by combining legal provisions with experience from similar cases. They should employ various methods—such as excerpting, creating tables, and drawing diagrams—to address the case’s key issues, thereby producing a case review record with a clear line of reasoning and well-defined focal points.
In his concluding remarks, Attorney Xia Jun emphasized that there are various techniques for reviewing case files, and attorneys should adapt their approach to each specific case, selecting the most appropriate method for the circumstances at hand. He encouraged the students to consistently maintain a professional spirit and a rigorous attitude throughout their future legal careers, treating every case file with care, analyzing every piece of evidence thoroughly, and approaching the review process with meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to excellence.
