On 9th January 2025, a delegation of King&Capital Law Firm's Criminal Department and Labour & Employment Department visited Wong Partnership, one of the four largest law firms in Singapore, and carried out an in-depth exchange of legal culture and lawyers' business activities. The visit not only enhanced the understanding of Chinese and Singaporean lawyers about each other's legal system, but also opened a new chapter of exchange and cooperation between the two law firms.
Ong & Partners is located in Marina Bay Financial Centre, Singapore, founded by Mr. Ong, an overseas Chinese, and is one of the four major law firms in Singapore. The delegation was warmly received by Wang & Partners, especially with Miao Miao, Liang Wei Tan and Zhuang Zizhao, three senior lawyers had in-depth exchanges. The two sides had in-depth exchanges and discussions on the Singapore lawyers' system, the process of lawyers handling cases, especially criminal case handling practices, as well as the latest development of legal services, business co-operation and so on.
During the exchange of issues related to criminal case handling practice, lawyers from both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on the types of criminal cases in Singapore, case handling process, lawyers' right to read documents, exclusion of illegal evidence and other practical issues. The delegation learnt that the criminal procedure system of Singapore is quite different from the current criminal procedure system of China in terms of the time for lawyers to read the files, the scope of reading the files, and the burden of proof for the exclusion of unlawful evidence, etc., which is related to the origins of the two countries' criminal law systems, the rate of criminal offences, and the types of criminal cases, etc. The two sides discussed and exchanged views on related topics. Based on the discussion and exchange of related topics, both sides shared their experiences and insights in handling cases under different legal systems and social backgrounds.
In addition, the two sides also exchanged their respective business directions and explored the potential for co-operation in the provision of cross-border legal services in international trade, intellectual property and other areas. Both parties expressed their hope that through this and further exchanges in the future, they would establish a long-term exchange and cooperation relationship, and work together to provide better legal services to their clients.
The visit of the delegation from King&Capital Law Firm to King&Capital Law Firm is not only a legal and cultural exchange, but also lays the foundation for future business cooperation. In the context of globalisation, the cooperation of international legal services is particularly important. It is hoped that through such exchanges, the understanding and cooperation between law firms of different countries can be enhanced, and the international development of legal services can be jointly promoted through the synergistic cooperation between multinational lawyers.
