Mr. Tian Wenchang, the Honorary Director of King and Capital, and Mr.Yang Zhaoguo, the Management Partner of King and Capital’s Criminal Procedure Department, were awarded the title of “China’s Top 10 Best Litigators”, presented by Asian Legal Business（ALB）.
Nominees of this award are inspected independently and objectively by the ALB’s research group with regards to their professional performance in 2012, clients’ evaluations and their involvement with social responsibility initiatives.
According to ALB, Mr. Tian Wenchang, the founder and Honorary Director of King and Capital, is regarded as China's most respected figure in the area of criminal procedure. He is well-known as “the academic lawyer” for his extraordinary achievements in both legal practice and academic research.
 In 2012, Mr. Tian Wenchang undertook 39 criminal and civil cases, many of which were extremely complicated and covered areas such as intentional injury, contract fraud, embezzlement and bribery, corruption, etc. With regards to civil cases, the total value amounted to billions of RMB.
Meanwhile, as the current Director of the Criminal Legal Affairs Committee under the All-China Lawyers' Association (ACLA), Tian Wenchang took the leading role in drafting "the Lawyers’ version" of the Criminal Procedure Law when the law was under modification. This demonstrates his significant influence in China’s legislative process.
With regards to academic achievement, Mr. Tian Wenchang is the co-composer of “Experience of Criminal Defense in China”, in which he summarizes the latest methodology of criminal defense and intensively analyzes China's current legal system. Once published, this book was acclaimed and become quite popular.
Mr. Tian Wenchang is also active in international communication. Last year, as a representative of Chinese lawyers, he attended meetings in Europe and America to discuss human rights issues. As a demonstration of his international recognition, Tian Wenchang was also awarded an honorary life membership of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in the USA in 2002.
Mr. Yang Zhaodong, as ALB has reviewed, has frequently been connected with some of the most significant economic cases in China. After representing Huang Guangyu, the former wealthiest figure in mainland China, Yang Zhaodong has become the person of authority in economic criminal cases.
In 2012, Mr.Yang Zhaodong’s legend continued. He represented Wu Ying in her sensational case of the judicial review of her death sentence. After the review procedure, the Supreme Court changed the former judgment of immediate execution of the death penalty to a death sentence with a two year reprieve.
This case has received massive attention from the general public and even national leaders. On the other hand, it also gave rise to an extensive debate about issues from reform of the financial system to the abolition of the death penalty in the case of economic crimes. While representing Wu Ying in her case, Mr. Yang Zhaodong called for reform of the current financial system in order to boost the development of the private and market economy.
In the past year, Mr.Yang Zhaodong has also represented many defendants in criminal syndicate cases. One of the cases, which took place in Henan and had a large number of people involved, was finally withdrawn by the procuratorate after a demand for retrial due to Mr.Yang Zhangdong’s strong defense.
