On April 22, 2024, “Challenges and Opportunities of Criminal Defense in the Context of Judicial Modernization” High-end Forum was successfully held in Southwest University of Political Science and Law, sponsored by Southwest University of Political Science and Law, and undertaken by Law School of Southwest University of Political Science and Law and Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Defense of Southwest University of Political Science and Law. Mr. Tian Wenchang, Honorary Director of King&Capital Law Firm, Honorary Advisor of Criminal Law Research Society of China Law Society and Advisor of Criminal Committee of All-China Lawyers Association, and Mr. Liang Yali, Senior Partner of King&Capital Law Firm and Director of Kyoto Criminal Defense Research Center, were invited to participate in the forum and make a special speech.

The forum was conducted in a combination of offline and online, with more than two hundred people attending the forum, including experts and scholars from universities, people from judicial practice departments and lawyers, and more than 7,000 people watched the forum online in real time.

In the seminar module of “High-quality Development of Criminal Defense in the New Era”, Mr. Tian Wenchang, the consultant of Criminal Committee of All-China Lawyers' Association, made a speech on the topic of “Basic Path of Criminal Defense Specialization”. He believes that, first of all, the specialization of criminal defense requires lawyers to strengthen the theoretical foundation. Theoretical skills is the foundation of criminal defense specialization. Criminal defense lawyers should not only study the principles, principles and concepts of legal theory, study the knowledge of criminal-related disciplines in order to improve the theoretical literacy of law, but also strengthen the theoretical foundation of criminal defense. Secondly, criminal defense specialization requires lawyers to improve criminal defense skills. Exquisite criminal defense skills is the embodiment of criminal defense specialization. In the seminar unit of “Opportunities for Criminal Defense: Taking the Revision of Criminal Procedure Law as an Opportunity”, Liang Yali, Director of King&Capital Criminal Defense Research Center, made a special speech that the core of this revision of the Criminal Procedure Law should still be to put the “Trial-centered” into practice. She was from the “rules of evidence”, “procedural improvement”, “system design” three aspects of the detailed description as a practical lawyers hope that the revision of the criminal procedure law to be resolved. Hope that this seminar can get the attention of the legislative department, further promote the “trial-centered”, “trial substance” of the judicial system reform, and at the same time, to fight for more space for the defense, safeguard the rights of the defendant, and optimize the business environment of the private enterprises and so on. Many aspects, respond to the high expectations of this amendment. As a criminal defense lawyer, while actively speaking out, we should also continue to refine our ability to effectively defend in terms of evidence, procedure, leniency system, etc., and to understand and flexibly apply the norms within the legal framework, so that we can better serve our clients and work for the progress of the rule of law.
