On March 14, 2026, the pre-competition training session for the 13th “Kyoto Cup” Criminal Moot Court Competition was successfully held. Three experienced attorneys provided students with detailed and in-depth explanations of the techniques involved in each stage of the moot court competition from different perspectives, offering the audience a wealth of valuable insights.

Host Fan Bincheng took the stage first to deliver opening remarks, followed by a detailed introduction to the schedule of the “Kyoto Cup” Criminal Moot Court Competition, helping everyone clearly understand the event’s proceedings. He then introduced the keynote speakers of the training session—three senior attorneys from King&Capital Law Firm—to the faculty and students in attendance.

Sun Guangzhi, a senior partner at King&Capital Law Firm, shared specific preparation techniques for each stage of the mock trial. He emphasized that when analyzing the case, participants should avoid overcomplicating matters and instead focus on the contradiction between common criminal charges and the “uniqueness” of the case facts. Additionally, he noted that case information should be organized around the focal points of the dispute, with attention paid to the relationships between pieces of evidence. During the court investigation phase, he advised focusing on facts relevant to conviction and sentencing when presenting a defense. Throughout the session, he guided participants through a detailed analysis using vivid case examples, demonstrating rigorous and robust logical reasoning.

Xu Wei, a partner at King&Capital Law Firm, began by addressing the norms and taboos associated with each role. He emphasized that courtroom etiquette and proper attire form the cornerstone of a trial. Prosecutors should focus on the forcefulness of their arguments and the logic of their evidence presentation, while defense attorneys should dissect the indictment, prepare precise cross-examination strategies, build a repertoire of legal terminology, and thoroughly practice role-reversal exercises before the competition—using early preparation to ensure a smooth and confident performance later on.

Wang Xintong, Senior Partner at King&Capital Law Firm, provided a comprehensive overview starting from the sequence of legal document preparation and the various stages of a trial. She meticulously outlined the entire preparation process for the mock trial, emphasizing that whether serving as a prosecutor or a defense attorney, one must adopt the opposing perspective and effectively control the overall situation and the entire process.
During this training session, the three attorneys not only demonstrated the professional competence and practical skills of outstanding trial lawyers to the students preparing for the “Kyoto Cup” Criminal Moot Court Competition, but also provided precise strategic guidance and key tips on critical details.
The written exams, interviews, and official rounds of the “Kyoto Cup” Criminal Moot Court Competition will be held in an orderly manner in the near future. We wish all law students the best of luck as they showcase their talents on the competition stage. May they perform with composure, grounded in professional expertise and legal principles, and achieve outstanding results once again!
