Recently, the “Seminar and Discussion on Major and Complex Cases,” organized by the Criminal Defense Research Center and the Complex Criminal Cases Research Center of King&Capital Law Firm, was successfully held at King&Capital Law Firm. The seminar was moderated by Xu Wei, Secretary-General of the King&Capital Complex Criminal Cases Research Center, with attorney Yan Huainan, who handled the case, presenting the case details and litigation process.
Renowned criminal defense attorney Tian Wenchang; Deng Zhuoxing and Liu Xinyi, assistant professors and master’s advisors at the School of Law, University of International Business and Economics; Yi Bin, a former prosecutor from Beijing; and senior partners at King&Capital Law Firm—Zang Desheng, Men Jinling, Liu Lijie, Weng Xiaoping, Xu Ying, Nie Sufang; Cong Zhuoyi, a former senior criminal judge at a Beijing Intermediate People’s Court; partners Zhang Wenwei, Meng Fen, Liu Jihui, and Zhou Wenda; and attorneys Ding Wei, Li Song, Zhou Sai, Wang Yao, Wu Shaodan, He Shunqi, Tang Xiaohu, Liu Bolin, and Sun Shushu, among others, attended the meeting to engage in an in-depth discussion on the defense strategy for a case involving a crime committed in the course of official duties.
At the meeting, Attorney Yan Huainan presented the basic facts of the case and its main points of contention. After hearing the case details, the attendees posed questions to the lead attorney regarding key issues in fact-finding and the application of the law, and each offered their opinions in turn.
In his opening remarks, Attorney Tian Wenchang went straight to the core point of contention in the case. His argument, grounded in the cutting edge of criminal law, was developed from both theoretical foundations and practical logic, offering a high-level, incisive analysis. Not only did it clarify the legal characterization of this specific case, but it also provided an extremely constructive framework for addressing similar issues of legal application.

Subsequently, participants engaged in a thorough exchange on the key factual issues and legal application in the case, offering their respective opinions and suggestions regarding the selection of defense strategies, the order of evidence review, and key points for handling the trial.
This seminar integrated diverse perspectives from criminal adjudication, legal theory, and criminal practice. Through collective deliberation, it systematized general defense strategies for cases involving official misconduct, providing valuable guidance for handling similar cases.
